I am on a mission, a better-beauty mission! After researching and finding out that ALL breast implants contained up to 50 toxic chemicals, I had them removed on January 24th. Many symptoms that I suffered from off and on for many years almost immediately disappeared. I now realize how our bodies can react to foreign objects and toxic chemicals.
After my surgery I started to become more knowledgable and I must say quite obsessive with starting to remove toxic products from my life. I bought some plants for my home to help purify the air, bought a GermGuardian Air Purifier, started to make safer swaps for cleaning products, and threw out harmful candles and air fresheners.
Being a makeup artist I absolutely love to wear makeup EVERY single day! I basically started to wear makeup at a very young age, stealing my mom's before I could buy my own. As I continued to do my research, I was shocked to find how many toxic ingredients were in cosmetics and skincare, even the "natural-based" brands. Being the research nerd that I've always been (exactly why my undergraduate degree was in Biology), I was intrigued to learn more about the effects cosmetics and skincare can have on our bodies and health.
As I have mentioned in previous blogs, our skin is the biggest organ in our bodies and provides a very large surface area for transmitting harmful chemicals. Exposure to toxic chemicals, whether from products we use in the shower or from our skincare routine or our laundry and cleaning products, is causing an ongoing rise in serious health conditions such as asthma, cancer, infertility, and hormone disruption. The things I wish I knew decades ago!
So as I started to search for safer beauty products, I came across Beautycounter. I first and foremost loved the company's mission: To get safer products into the hands of everyone. It's astonishing to me that the U.S. has banned less than 40 chemicals in personal care products, meanwhile Europe has banned more than 1,300 chemicals in such products. Beautycounter was developed to surpass the standards of the U.S. law and they ban the use of more than 1,500 potentially harmful chemicals from their products. I found this to be very intriguing and empowering because there is not one other cosmetic or skincare line that I know of that can say the same.
Like I said and you all should know by now, I love makeup. It's a form of art for me. But I also love life and am on a mission to make some changes for my health and longevity. So I was given the opportunity to try some makeup and skincare products from Beautycounter about a month ago. I used only their products for a whole week. I was extremely pleased with not only how my skin looked, but also with how the makeup lasted all day. After the week, I honestly did not want to mail the products back. I mentally felt refreshed knowing that I was not putting toxic chemicals on my face. Since surgery I have been working hard to detoxify my body of mold, heavy metals and toxic chemicals from the implants so I did not want to keep putting bad chemicals on my face each day. At that moment I knew in my heart that I wanted to join this safer beauty mission so I can not only feel relieved that I am applying safer products to my skin on a daily basis but that I can also help advocate and share safer and healthier products to my friends, family, and clients.
I have always felt this calling to help others live a healthier life, whether it be through my career as a physical therapist, or through nutrition consultations and coaching, or more recently by raising awareness about Breast Implant Illness. And now I am honored to join Beautycounter on their mission to provide safer products and advocate for healthier lives. I encourage you to do your own research about the effects of toxic chemicals in skincare and cosmetics on your health.
